Patrick C. Hsieh, M.D. is director of the minimally invasive spine program at the USC Spine Center, part of Keck Medicine of USC. He is Professor of Neurological Surgery at the Keck School of Medicine of USC, where he also serves as director of the spinal oncology program and neurosurgery spine program. Dr. Hsieh is a member of American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, Scoliosis Research Society and North American Spine Society. He has also served on the scientific program planning committee of the AANS/CNS Joint Section of the Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves and the North American Spine Society.

Dr. Hsieh also serves as an invited topic editor for Neurosurgical Focus as well as a reviewer for World Neurosurgery, Journal of Neurosurgery and Neurosurgery. He is actively involved in research and has won the Congress of Neurological Surgeons Depuy Spine Fellowship Award. His clinical and research interests include spinal oncology, including primary and metastatic spine tumors, spinal deformity, reconstructive spinal surgery, spine trauma, degenerative spine diseases and stereotactic radiosurgery. His current research aims to developprimary cell lines and animal model for Chordoma. He is also active in spinal cord injury research as the principle investigator in multiple spinal cord injury trials at USC over the last 9 years.

“Spine surgery is one the areas where we are really able to impact a large population of people and help people improve their quality of life,” says Dr. Hsieh. “You are making a significant impact to the lives of a large group of people. There has also been a shift in paradigms in spine surgery. If you think about spine surgery in the past, it was about ablation such as removing herniated discs and the like. But now there is a shift to looking at technologies for restorative care, such as research with stem cells and brain-machine interface for spinal cord injury.”

Dr. Hsieh earned his medical degree at the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine. He completed his residency at Northwestern Memorial Hospital/McGaw Medical Center and Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, where he also completed a clinical fellowship in advanced minimally invasive spinal surgery and complex reconstructive spine surgery. Subsequently, he was appointed an instructor in Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, where he alsocompleted additionalpost-graduate fellowship in spinal oncology and complex spine surgery.
